Our School-Based English Curriculum

        Since 2008 we have gradually developed and implemented school-based programmes that primarily cater for the diverse learning needs of our students.  Introducing on-going formative assessment for smaller classes has enabled us to detect different learning strengths and styles, closely monitor individuals and further cater for their learning needs. In doing to so, we aim to enhance opportunities for our learners to achieve their potential in speaking, reading and writing the English language.

A. Net Scheme

1.      P1-3 Levelled Reading ProgrammeThe English teachers, along with the NET have all been involved over a number of years in an action research project to formulate the school’s own leveled reading programme for lower forms. Teachers meet regularly to evaluate the program and make changes when necessary. The students are divided into levels according to their P.M. Benchmark Reading Assessment score. The individual assessments are done annually to track the student’s continuing progress and to re-form level groupings where necessary. The children enjoy reading books at their own level; avoiding the frustration of texts that are too difficult, or the boredom of text that are too easy. Each title has a stimulating extension activity. The programme also encourages home reading with parents by providing suitable leveled home-reading books, along with a reading record table and student rewards. B. English Enhancement Grant Scheme (EGGS) 1. P1-6 E-story and E-vocabulary Programme: This programme provides a set of stimulating on-line stories, which motivate the students and build up their confidence through independent learning. 2.      P4-5 Arts-Drama Programme: Focus on the ‘communicative approach’ to teaching English by teaching and practicing functional English through drama, eventually leading to a variety genre based writing activities.  3. P6 Presentation Skill Development: Supports the preparation of and involvement in oral presentations, speeches, interviews and discussions.   II. Non Main-stream Lessons

A. Schemes

   1. P1-3 Bright Readers Programmer: Enhances the students’ reading skills and confidence by listening to individuals read one on one before school and in recess periods. 2. P3 Independent Readers and Writers:  Extends gifted students by enhancing oral reading comprehension as well as encouraging project research and writing in areas of interest. 3. P3 Reading Support Programme: Encourages and supports weaker students through reading, high frequency word practise and phonemic awareness revision in a non-threatening, fun learning environment. 4. P1-2 Sunshine Programme: Provides simplified exercises to promote self-confidence and foundation consolidation.    5. The English Club: Attracts students from P2-P4 who are highly motivated in extending their English language learning through drama games and performances as well as stimulating writing activities. 6. Reading Angels: Connects patient and caring P6 ‘buddies’ with P3 students needing regular supported reading practise.     7. English Ambassadors
